Training and Approving Volunteers

Training is available to all volunteers.

Volunteers wishing to provide Respite care are required to attend a series of preparation sessions. This provides training in the skills needed to become a Lambeth Family Link volunteer Respite Carer.

Volunteers will be able to offer support once all their references are obtained.

Members of the Management committee meet to approve Volunteers. Their decisions are based on reports written by a Lambeth Family Link worker. Each volunteer has the chance to contribute to his or her report before it is submitted.

DISABILITY AWARENESS WORKSHOP - 6/6/06

It was my first time to participate in training of this type of subject and found that it was very useful. I gained a more understanding about different disabilities and methods in which to deal with different situations with people with a variety of disabilities. The most important thing I learnt was how to communicate with a disabled person and how to use words appropriately in order not to discriminate against them. I found the training day well organised, helpful and enjoyable. I would like to thank Lambeth Family Link for giving me this opportunity.

The Disability Awareness training was great and very useful especially because it was facilitated by someone who was hard of hearing. It opened my eyes as to how difficult it is for people with disabilities in their day to day living e.g I was not aware that buying a train ticket could be so challenging for them. Talking to the facilitator was quite challenging because I had to keep eye contact at all times during verbal communication.

I would recommend this training to everyone especially those who are the first point of contact eg ticket offices etc.
